I drew this artwork for a series of official Tony Hawk skateboards designed for a younger audience. If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I love drawing Tiki characters, so I jumped all over this beach theme.
Here’s another official Tony Hawk skateboard I designed a few years back – the direction here was geared toward kids (and grown up kids) of a Space Knight fighting a dragon from another dimension.
I had the privilege of designing official skateboards for TONY HAWK a while back.
This particular design had strange art-direction – the idea was to draw a metallic hawk (or vulture? I can’t remember) in a toxic wasteland. I thought it would be fun to draw a reference to Blinky, the three eyed fish, along with a mutant rat.
A private collector commissioned me to paint this one-of-a-kind tiki totem skateboard deck in acrylic on wood.
I designed the different tiki heads digitally in Clip Studio Paint, and then transferred the sketch to the board using carbon paper. Using acrylics, I blocked in the colors and began adding highlights and shadows. Then, when all the colors were added (which was the most time consuming part of the process), I painted the line work with a brush and black ink. The client was so much fun to work with – he wanted the entire thing to be a surprise, so he never saw any sketches or progress shots. I don’t do a lot of traditional painting, so I was unsure how it would turn out, but I’m very happy with it.
I was recently hired to conceptualize and illustrate a team of Superhero zombies to be laser-engraved into skateboards by Revenga. It was challenging to pump a ton of detail in the board, while making sure to keep the lines bold enough as to not cause much trouble in the engraving process.
While designing, I also had to structure the design so the layout could be changed to fit a T-Shirt as well. I made sure to keep the characters masked on separate layers, that way moving them around at the end was relatively easy.
We also created a silk-screen color version for boards and shirts, using around 6 colors.
Client Testimonial:

T-Shirt illustration for 5-Star Apparel. The client asked me to create a parody of a Barbie who has lost her way. We decided on a mugshot photo of a strung-out, meth-head version. Set up for silk-screening, 4 colors.
