T-Shirt illustration of a pack of wild and evil mushrooms I created for a new apparel brand. I illustrated this in Manga Studio and colored it in Adobe Photoshop. Set up for silk-screening, using four colors.

West Coast Pitbull
Description:
West Coast Pitbull, a huge brand that caters to all things pitbull, hired me to create a series of apparel designs featuring the Pitbull in all his badass glory.
Our second design had me drawing a pitbull skull in a decorative Ace of Spades card design. I decided to add a lot of detail to the skull, but push the other design elements into the background to help it pop out.
The next West Coast Pitbull t-shirt design I created imagines a dark future where humanity’s only hope for survival rests in the paws of cybernetically enhanced Pitbulls designed to hunt out their enemies. I drew this pitbull on a pile of skulls because it just felt right.
I illustrated this crazy and horrifying clown for West Coast Pitbull’s new apparel series. This was a digital painting created in Adobe Photoshop – I decided to leave out all the line art in the design and try to go for a more realistic look.

Cyborg Leprechaun fire-fighter I created for a St. Patrick’s day t-shirt template I illustrated for fire departments and t-shirt shops to license to celebrate their Irish Pride!
I try to design one of these each year, and I had a lot of fun with this one, trying to approach it differently by making the Leprechaun into a cyborg. From the future? Only time will tell.

Silk-screen t-shirt illustration I created in tribute to the legendary Cheech and Chong from Up In Smoke with the characters as weed-eating, brain-smoking zombies.
I drew this artwork in Clip Studio Paint (Manga Studio 5) with a Wacom Cintiq. This is inspired by an illustration I created years ago – I wanted to test out my new skills, and design something that was more fitting for a t-shirt and filled out the front more (the previous design was too square). I also wasn’t happy with the likeness of the characters in the first design, so I drew everything from the ground up, and added a lot of elements from the films and really tried to do my best to capture the spirit of these marijuana legends.

Beach Shrimp Festival T-Shirt Design

Model Tees
Fun limited color silkscreen t-shirt I created for a Shrimp Gumbo festival in Alabama featuring a handsome shrimp serenading a beautiful shrimps and the rest of the beach-goers.
The design was a fun challenge because the client liked my colorful full-color beach designs, and wanted something similar. But we could only use a limited silk-screen palette. I used halftones to cheat on some colors. We chose to draw the scene at night to make it unique to the previous year’s designs.
Evil Fish and Lure T-Shirt Design
Illustration I created for a new apparel line showcasing the lures by Rapala for fisherman. The brand wanted something really edgy and dark, so we gave the fish a pretty menacing look. It’s always a fun challenge taking on a detailed scene like this when limited to a smaller silk-screen palette. This design was set up with halftones.

Marvel
Description:
Talk about a dream job! I was fortunate enough to be hired to create an officially licensed t-shirt of Marvel superheroes to be sold in retail outlets.
The project was an immense challenge, as I tried to incorporate my style into the design, while also making sure to not deviate too much from the art direction from Marvel (which there was quite a lot of!). This was designed in full color, to be separated later for simulated process. Overall, I’m very pleased with how the design turned out, and awestruck that I had this opportunity.

How to draw Lochness Monster for rock poster and t-shirt using Pentel Brush pen on paper.
Silk-screen poster illustration of a happy Loch Ness Monster I created for the band Lochness Monster. I had a blast working on this. The band gave me a ton of freedom on this design, and I came up with the idea of having the Loch Ness Monster looking friendly, with a severed arm dangling from its mouth, and the collected trophy/cameras of tourists hung around his neck. He’s an elusive fella! The design was set up for silk-screening using around 5 colors, created primarily for promotional posters and apparel for the band.

Digitally painted t-shirt illustration of an evil skull with wings and barbaric weapons I created for the dark apparel company Spiral Direct. Stylized illustration of a bucket utility truck for a power company’s brand of apparel I created in Manga Studio. This was fun to take on a subject matter that I don’t deal with much, and practice drawing vehicles for a bit. I find it tricky inking vehicles because every line has to be right – and it’s tricky to not slip into drawing something that looks too rigid. The client was happy with the final result, which was set up for full-color printing on t-shirts.

I created this t-shirt illustration of a surfing cartoon shark for a children’s line of beach themed clothing. I was thrilled to be hired to create artwork for a new line of apparel for Smith & Wesson, featuring silk-screen illustrations of big angry eagles. It was a really fun challenge drawing the eagles, which I’ve always found difficult. Need to invest in a pet eagle for reference. The designs all needed to stay under six colors, which is always a challenge as soon as you introduce an american flag into the design (which eats up three colors right away). I used halftones wherever I could to limit the total number of colors.
The designs will be available in Smith & Wesson’s catalog, as well as in many retailers, such as Cabela’s.

I created this mad scientist character for an auto-repair shop whose specialty is custom built choppers and hotrods. The brand wanted a dark but playful design that illustrated them as a blend of mechanic and mad scientist. I thought it would be cool to show a frankenstein-ed hotrod on the operating table behind the mad scientist, as he raises his creation up to the lightning. I created this illustration of a skeleton with a sledgehammer for a new apparel brand showcasing the work of DIY television personalities, called The Reno Life. I tried to add a lot of my own style to the skeleton, and keep it tough while not scaring the kiddies away. We did a female version as well – and I found drawing skeletons to look female is a bit challenging when you don’t have many… parts…. to work with. I was hired to illustrate this T-Shirt design for one of my favorite clients, Darkhorse Fightwear, for their new line of MMA apparel. The design was set up for silk-screen using three colors, and illustrated in Manga Studio and Adobe Photoshop. The design features a skull in the center with wings and chains surrounding.

I was hired to create a T-Shirt design for a new apparel brand called Saltopus. I was given only the direction that it had to include angry monkeys. I illustrated a few concept sketches, and the client chose this concept, of evil monkeys emerging from an innocent looking Barrel of Monkeys toy. The shirt was designed to be just one-color, which always poses a challenge. Since I have no highlight or shading color, I really have to pack a lot of detail into the lineart and make sure it reads well from a distance. We are both very happy with how this turned out.
T-Shirt illustration I created as a tribute to one of the greatest films ever made: Dumb and Dumber. The piece is called “Dead and Deader,” and features Harry (Jeff Daniels) and Lloyd (Jim Carey) as decaying zombie corpses.
The t-shirt illustration was set up for silk-screening using 6 colors. It was a challenge to find the right color scheme for all these items (the iconic tuxedos, the worm farm, the Shaggin Wagon) with such limited color. But I’m very happy with how it turned out. I also recorded a speed-painting tutorial for my YouTube channel that I’m excited to share.
Check out this speed-painting tutorial video I created showing the entire illustration process:
Pencil drawing created in Manga Studio 5, using a variation of a pencil brush I purchased from the talented Jonathon Rector. Ray Frenden also makes fantastic pencil brushes that you should check out.
The design is now all inked and ready to color. Coloring is one of the least time-consuming parts of the process for me, but it adds the most to the illustration.
Here are a few detail shots of the illustration. I tried to cram as many Dumb and Dumber references that I could into the illustration. Here’s Petey, not looking so good.
I really enjoyed drawing the Shaggin Wagon – I hope they bring it back in the sequel.
And here is the final illustration! I’m very please with how it turned out. I created two versions: a full-color version, and a silk-screen version. The differences are subtle, but in the silk-screen version, I had to come up with creative ways to create a lot of depth and color using only six colors.
T-Shirt illustration I created for Spiral Direct of a warrior confronting an evil dragon. I digitally painted this illustration in Adobe Photoshop and Manga Studio 5.
